Buying an Oscilloscope Probe

If you're measuring typical signals and voltage levels a passive oscilloscope probe will provide the best bang for the buck.  They are capable of a wide range of measurement capabilities and pairing a passive probe with a current probe will provide you with an ideal setup for measuring power.

Almost every passive probe has some sort of attenuation such as 10x or 100x.  These 10x attenuation factors reduce the circuit loading compared to a 1x probe and make for an excellent oscilloscope probe.  At some point higher frequency signals will become distorted at which point you'll need to upgrade to a differential or active probe to get a realistic interpretation of the signal.
